On behalf of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Canada Research Chairs Program, the Hon. Gary Goodyear announced eight new research partnerships as part of the International Research Chairs Initiative (IRCI). This unique program pairs outstanding university scholars in Canada with their peers in the developing world to confront issues of common concern.

The announcement was made on February 25 at a reception on Parliament Hill.
“I am…pleased to see such a promising initiative derived from a partnership between IDRC and the Canada Research Chairs Program. Working together, they are playing an important role in helping to build and maintain research excellence in Canada and around the world,” said Mr Goodyear, Canada’s Minister of State for Science and Technology.

IDRC plays a unique role as a Canadian organization. IDRC focuses on creating knowledge — knowledge that will benefit humanity. As the government’s foremost agency in funding research for development, IDRC is a key player on Canada’s foreign policy team.”

Working at universities in Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Morocco, and Uganda, each IDRC Research Chair is pursuing a five-year research program in collaboration with a Canada Research Chair. Each team will address a key development challenge, including infectious diseases, pollution, child nutrition, and wireless communications.

“The partnership between IDRC and the Canada Research Chairs Program is a distinctly Canadian international initiative that brings the power of science and technology to bear on problems in the developing world, while creating unique research opportunities for Canadians,” said IDRC President David Malone.

The Initiative was launched by IDRC, in collaboration with the Canada Research Chairs Program, in December 2007. A rigorous peer-review of more than 100 applications determined which eight teams would be awarded up to CA$1 million over five years.

In addition to the knowledge, policy options, and technology transfers that will emerge from these partnerships, students in Canada and the developing world will be exposed to valuable learning opportunities, helping to grow the next generation of highly skilled workers.

The researchers will all be at IDRC’s head office in Ottawa on April 14 and 15 – many meeting face-to-face for the first time.

Full researcher biographies and project descriptions are online at www.idrc.ca/irci.
