IDRC congratulates Clotilde Fonseca, recognized as "A leader making a difference"
2009-02
Amidst the whirl of inaugural activities in Washington DC ushering in Barack Obama’s presidency, IDRC partner Clotilde Fonseca was recognized as a “Leader Making a Difference” for her contributions to education technology.
Fonseca received the award at the LINK-live Presidential Inaugural Gala 2009, a non-partisan event hosted by several non-profit organizations promoting technology and education. The gala’s goal was to highlight to the new administration how technology can be used to serve humanity.
Fonseca is Executive Director of the Omar Dengo Foundation, a long-term IDRC partner based in Costa Rica. The foundation is a private, non-profit organization that develops and carries out national and regional projects in educational innovation and new technologies. In particular, it focuses on expanding computer-use among youths and teaching methods that reinforce creativity and capacity development.
One of IDRC’s more ambitious partnerships with the Omar Dengo Foundation is Lanz@. This three-year program running in five Central American countries uses a “train-the-trainers” model, in which local researchers work in selected communities to adapt and develop digital training tools for teaching business skills. Lanz@’s goal is to foster a culture of private enterprise that will create jobs and improve productivity, especially among youth and women.
