Geoff Tansey has won the coveted Derek Cooper Award for best food campaigner/educator at the 2008 BBC Food and Farming Awards. Tansey is the co-editor of The Future Control of Food: A Guide to International Negotiations and Rules on Intellectual Property, Biodiversity and Food Security, published by IDRC and Earthscan.
Considered the “Oscars” of the food world, the awards are handed out each year to food producers, retailers, cooks, and campaigners nominated by the public.
“These award winners have all been helping to keep alive the tradition of the best local and sustainable food. They are a model for the future,” said Sheila Dillon of BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme, and host of this year’s awards ceremony.
A freelance writer and consultant specializing in food, agriculture, and related intellectual property issues affecting trade and biodiversity, Tansey is a trustee of the Food Ethics Council, a honorary research fellow in the Department of Peace Studies at Bradford University, and visiting fellow at the Centre for Rural Economy at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The Derek Cooper Award honours British journalist Derek Cooper’s long career dedicated to reporting on the food we eat.
