Two IDRC Partners Awarded World's Largest Prize for Grassroots Environmentalists

IDRC partners Yuyun Ismawati and Syeda Rizwana Hasan have won the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize for 2009.

Ismawati was recognized for her work promoting community-based wastewater and solid waste management in Indonesia. Rizwana’s efforts to tighten regulations for Bangladesh’s ship-breaking industry netted her the prize.

The Goldman prize, valued at US$150 000, was established by American civic leaders and philanthropists Richard and the late Rhoda Goldman. It is announced every April to coincide with Earth Day.

The largest award in the world for grassroots environmentalists, the prize honours environmental heroes from each of the six continental regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America.

Winners are selected by an international jury from confidential nominations submitted by a worldwide group of environmental organizations and individuals.

Ismawati is being recognized for her work through BaliFokus, the non-governmental organization she founded and directs.

IDRC is supporting a project implemented by BaliFokus to develop and test models of decentralized solid waste management for low-income urban areas. (For more information on the project: Community Solutions for Indonesia’s Waste)

Rizwana is Bangladesh’s leading environmental attorney and the chief executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA). With IDRC support, BELA is working to improve the management of community-based fisheries organizations in Bangladesh. (For more information on the project: Improving Flood Plain Management through Adaptive Learning Networks.)
