IDRC Photo: B.H. Randil Pushpananda

IDRC’s regional office for Southeast and East Asia celebrated the power of photography this fall with its “Research and Development in Pictures” photo competition, and the results are in.

The competition encouraged IDRC’s research partners in Southeast and East Asia to submit photos illustrating their work.

More than 60 photos depicting such development themes as sanitation, information and communication technologies, coastal vulnerability, and natural resource management were submitted to the jury.

The winning photos were chosen based on visual impact and creativity, direct relevance to IDRC-supported program themes, and technical excellence.

First prize of CA$500 was awarded to Ren Jian from China for his photo of Tibetan farmers poring over a map of their natural environment.

Cambodia’s Kim Nong’s photo of a well-placed monkey next to a sign promoting mangrove conservation earned him second prize, and CA$300.

Nathaniel Bantayan from the Philippines snapped a photo of artfully bundled mountain rice, and secured himself third prize and CA$200.

Ten special merit prizes worth CA$100 were awarded to:

  • Suchit Nanda, India
