IDRC Partner to Lead Global Environmental Network
2008-10
Indian environmentalist Ashok Khosla has been elected president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network.
This is the latest achievement in Khosla’s esteemed career in environmental development, which has included stints as a director in the United Nations Environment Programme, board member of the International Institute on Sustainable Development, and director of India’s Office of Environmental Planning and Coordination. In 2002 Khosla was awarded the prestigious UNEP Sasakawa Environmental Prize for his life-long contribution to environmental causes.
Khosla is the founder and outgoing chairman of Development Alternatives, a leading Indian environmental organization and long-time IDRC partner on a number of projects. Currently, researchers are exploring the links between ecosystems and human health by studying the health hazards of India’s stone quarrying and crushing sector and developing technological alternatives to improve working and living conditions.
