Export Development Canada's (EDC) Regional Manager in Rio de Janeiro, Fernanda Custodio, and IDRC President, Maureen O'Neil |
IDRC’s President, Maureen O’Neil accompanied Canada’s Governor General Michaëlle Jean on her State visit to Brazil July 6–15, 2007. O’Neil was part of a delegation of Canadians that included Canada’s ambassador to Brazil, Guillermo E. Rishchynski, youth leaders, artists, and representatives from both governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). During the visit, O’Neil co-chaired a roundtable on citizen engagement with Candido Grzybowksi, president of the Brazilian Institute of Social and Economic Analysis (Ibase). There, the delegation met with a wide range of Brazilian civil society to discuss how to engage citizens, in particular youth, in public life and public policy decisions, and how to ensure public policy is based on solid knowledge and research findings. Participants included representatives for academia, youth, Indigenous communities, and NGOs working in the areas of environment, human rights, and social development. The roundtable built on national youth dialogues that took place in Canada and Brazil in 2005 to discuss issues both countries face in engaging with their youth. The Brazilian Youth Dialogue, organized by Ibase and the Pólis Institute, and funded by IDRC, surveyed 8 000 young Brazilians to learn their views on democracy and their role in society, while the National Dialogue and Summit, organized by the Canadian Policy Research Networks (CPRN), involved 150 Canadians aged 18-25. For more on results from the dialogues On July 10, Jean gave a speech at a luncheon hosted by the Brazil–Canada Chamber of Commerce in which she highlighted collaborations between the two countries, and mentioned IDRC's contributions to Brazil. Read a transcript of the speech O’Neil also participated in formal discussions on science and technology during the visit.
