IDRC Partner Wins Women of the Earth Award

Amanda Vincent, co-founder and director of Project Seahorse International, has been awarded first prize in the Canadian edition of the 2007 Yves Rocher Foundation Women of the Earth Awards.

Vincent was acknowledged for her achievements in the field of marine conservation.

Based in Vancouver, Canada, at the University of British Columbia, Project Seahorse is a global program for seahorse conservation and research, and is supported by IDRC and other organizations. It has helped secure official listings of many seahorse species as endangered, and played a key role in the regulation of international trade in seahorses – the first fish species to be accorded such protection.

Vincent was the first biologist to study seahorses under water, document their extensive commercial trade, and initiate a seahorse conservation project.

The annual Women of the Earth Awards are held in 11 countries around the world in recognition of women committed to improving and preserving nature for the benefit of their own and the global community.

As the Canadian winner, Vincent was eligible for the International Women of the Earth Awards along with other national awardees from Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Regula Ochsner from Switzerland won for her work combating deforestation in Madasgar.
